Hi Amanda! Great questions. I’m fortunate enough to be able to study a group that resides in my woods in front of my home. For a few years, I go out and listen at night. You can tell the juveniles from adults by their footsteps. I listen to their activity, and pinpoint where they were and what they were doing. The next am I go out and see what has been done. I found, with this group, my juveniles are making the small shield like structures. Often made along the deer trail and along the edge of my woods where they watch me. The adults are the ones pushing over trees, dragging logs, and making the large tree bend. The adults are dragging logs and making large squares with them. I think everything is a play ground for the young ones, as they run everywhere and often make “ woo“ sounds out of excitement. The shields they make have a purpose though. The adults often teach the young to hunt small game, and when those animals are stuck up aa large tree, branches are broken and swung at the prey to get them down. Everything they do and make has a purpose, and even stick breaking is used for communication to me and between themselves. It’s fascinating stuff!
